we are the late bloomers

March 13, 2012

We are the late bloomers. We have something roaring inside us and we don’t what it is or how to set it free. So we keep it in a little cage and feed it with fear.

There are some people who just have it: the guts, the funds, the resources, the confidence, the connections, the discipline, the faith, the great ideas, the right timing, the knowing from a young age what it is they want to do. We are not those people. We are the ones who take the long way there. We wander, we window shop, we stop for coffee, we search for signs, we search for purpose. We are the incurably curious. We are the keen observers. We are gathering knowledge and collecting experiences. We are standing in the waiting line but we know our turn will come.  We are the marathon runners. While all the others are racing ahead, we are pacing ourselves, we are building strength, we are slowly catching up.

And there will come a day when we’ll unlock the door, and like a bear in the springtime, we will come out of our cave and take a deep breath and clear the winter from our lungs and set off into the wilderness.

And it will all come together in the least expected way.

Not all those who wander are lost.” – Tolkien

Oh goodness. You took all the noise out of my head and turned it into words, you took my struggle and you made it seem honourable and I love you for it.
You don’t realise how your words can make a girl miles and miles away feel like she has wings.
I so needed this as a reaffirmation that I’m doing it right xxx

    Thank you for this post!
I am 51 years old and still ‘don’t know what I want to be when I grow up’. From now on I will refer to myself as a late bloomer, and it’s reassuring to know that there are others out there too 🙂

Oh, yes. That just about sums it up. Thanks Janine. I don’t know you but you seem to know me! How is that? Feels like I’ve been waiting to hear this.
P.S. Been lurking around the edges of your blogosphere for a while now. Don’t think I’ve made a comment before. I have enjoyed the journey so far. Can’t even remember how I found it.
    Thanks for sharing, Nicky.

Thank you for this. I’ve been feeling the same way lately, but not quite sure how to put my thoughts into words. You have said it so eloquently and it has filled me with inspiration to continue the marathon.

“But watch out when a late bloomer finally gets it – late bloomers are the driving forces in the world because they have spent a long time digesting ideas, information and knowledge just to come up with some amazing solutions to the world’s problems.”

I so needed to hear this today.

My heart feels like it’s been searching and searching…for everything…for time.
I’ve been trying to embrace it, but sometimes you need that acknowledgement that it’s okay to take time. Thank you for that! 🙂
