list 25: top montreal moments with the english boy

September 29, 2010

seems like only yesterday, he & i were running around the airport frantically
trying to find each other in the chaos of a thousand travelers
yelling “where are you?” on our cellphones
and then i felt a tap on my shoulder and there he was and i jumped in his arms
and we stood there kissing and hugging each other forever
and we couldn’t wipe the silly grins off our faces

before we knew it, a week had passed
and suddenly, we were loading his bags in the trunk of a taxi
and the cab driver sat in the car while we said good-bye
and we stood there for a few minutes, not wanting to let go
and i couldn’t wipe the tears off my face fast enough
for him not to notice

a few days have gone by since he flew back to london
and though the good-byes hurt a little more each time
i am left with a stronger sense of us
and it is clear now what must be done

but until the next countdown begins to our next reunion
there are so many wonderful memories of his time in montreal to smile upon
and it helps to focus on them when i miss him
these are some of my favorite moments:

  1. climbing the fire escape of a 19-story building with karl & roma on the night of the equinox.  the clouds were like trails in the sky. we drank balvenie single malt and ate macaroons on the rooftop and listened to the wind and thee silver mount zion, then biked home at 3am.
  2. dinner at les enfants terribles. sitting across a table from him, sharing food and wine and getting to know him better is one of my favorite things to do.
  3. him reading winnie the pooh to me, one sleepy afternoon, my head on his lap. simple bliss.
  4. doing a 200-ft bungee jump with my mom, sister and brother-in-law (what a thrilling way for him to meet the family eh?)
  5. bixi biking through the tripes of the city all the way to habitat 67. he makes me appreciate the beauty of the buildings around me.
  6. playing 3 intense rounds of air hockey before going to see i’m still here (he kicked my ass. i blame it on the fact that i had to play in heels. weak argument, i concede, but i have too much pride to admit defeat).
  7. picking up fresh fish and corn on the cob from the market, then having a bbq in the back yard on a warm night, under the tiki lanterns.
  8. trying on hats for fun at a random costume shop in the old port while he impersonated various characters from oliver twist.
  9. picnicking on wine and cheese and bread in my bed on the night of his arrival.
  10. the entire surprise day he planned for me, which began with a massage and 3 hours of hydrotherapy at les bains scandinaves, followed by tapas and wine at Pullman’s and a lovely night in a ridiculously luxurious hotel room.
  11. watching juno while eating take-out rice bowls from aux vivres. it felt very civilized and domestic and normal and perfect.
  12. sipping a couple scotches at the bar of the whisky café. it’s a little ritual we have and we’ve done it in practically every country we’ve visited. it’s our thing. it’s how we do.
  13. swimming in a cold lake, up north.  my first and last fresh water swim of the season.
  14. there are many ways to say i love you for the first time and he couldn’t have done it more perfectly than at the airport, when, within moments of seeing me, he said: “this is what i’ve been wanting to tell you for the past 4 months… i love you”. no word of a lie. it’s like he flew into montreal strait from a fairy tale. there could have been unicorns and rainbows trailing behind but i wouldn’t have even noticed because i was too busy squealing i love you tooooooo (in a very girlish manner, i might add).  the thing is, i am constantly trying to convince him that i am not a typical “girly girl” and it appears the boy not only proved me wrong on this one but also had me melting in a puddle of love goo in front of everyone at the airport. bastid.
  15. the night we kissed at the cabin in the woods; on the porch, under the full moon, with the only sound being that of the rain on the leaves of the trees. suddenly things didn’t feel so confusing and we knew it was time to start planning for the future.
  16. talking about our next get-together. we are hooked on the countdown, people. it’s like crack.

Girly-girl or not, this is a love story for romantics. It’s dripping with sincerity and suspense and it sounds like the best is yet to come. That list made me smile both times I read it.

To say im not blushing a bit would be a lie.
I also will not attempt to write anything as near as pleasurable
    as my Canadian Girl!
I will however join this page of such delightful comments.
My feelings are so mutual. I am smitten I’ll admit.
I am looking forward to the future now.
Everything feels as though it’s going to be alright.
    Cheers
